We’re at the time of year when family photos start to enter the picture. If you’re like my family, we do them once a year for our annual Christmas card and Christmas gifts for our grandparents. I think for me, they are so special because I get to watch my family grow up and change over the years through these pictures. I can look back at them for years to come and remember each stage of motherhood. And like most moms, if you scroll through my camera roll there aren’t many photos of me with my kids, so family photos are my opportunity to have moments with my kids captured forever.
That being said, you want to go into a family photo session prepared. You are investing money in these pictures and a little prep work will go a long way in terms of helping you feel satisfied and confident with your investment. I have come up with 7 makeup tips for you to consider when heading into a professional photo session.
Always use a makeup primer! Priming the skin will help prep your skin for your application and ensure your makeup doesn’t settle between the time you apply and the time you snap your photos giving you that freshly applied look. One key to think about, make sure your primer ingredients match your makeup ingredients (aka water-based with water-based and silicone-based with silicone-based) that way your makeup doesn’t slip and slide. If you are new to wearing a primer, I recommend testing out your primer and application a few days before the photos, the day of isn’t the best time to be trying new techniques! I've linked a few of my favorite primers here if you don't already have one!
Skip the SPF, or at least the products containing a higher SPF. I know this is a big one, as someone who wears sunscreen under my makeup. If you use products that have SPF, maybe your moisturizer, primer, or foundation, it’ll wash you out and make you appear more white. I have heard, but haven’t tested this theory, that if you use products under 30 SPF you decrease this risk slightly. Either way, I’m not willing to chance it on picture day, so I opt out of using just for the day.
Give those eyebrows a little TLC! By filling in your brows, you are giving yourself an instant facelift making you appear younger and more fresh. Also, filled in brows frame the face and add that extra little finishing touch to any makeup application. You can use an eyeshadow for a more subtle fill in or opt for a pencil, pomade or gel for a little more drama. I have a few of my favorites products linked here, but either way don’t skip this step!
Apply your products with a little more intensity. Your everyday application won’t pick up well on camera so you’ll want to go a little heavier. If you’re used to wearing a light or medium coverage foundation, don’t add more for a caked on look, instead opt for a full coverage foundation so that you aren’t washed out on camera. Add some contour, or go a bit heavier with your application if you already wear, to add some shape and dimension to your face so that you don’t appear flat in your family photos. This will be a game changer for you and keep you from getting lost on camera!
Add eyes! Whether you wear lashes or add a little heavier eye makeup make sure you give this area some time and attention. If you don’t typically wear eyeliner, adding a little tight lining to help make your lashes appear more full will make an impact (here's a quick tutorial to watch). Add a darker shade to the outer corner of the eye so that you have some dimension and they don’t get lost! Or even adding a little eyeshadow under the eyes will give the illusion you're wearing eyeliner. There are so many options! As someone with short lashes, I love adding a few false lashes to the top outer edge just to add a little something extra for photos. Here are a few of my current favorite products.
You need that pop of color from blush! Adding foundation is great for evening out skin tone, but if you only wear one product you’re losing dimension and you’ll feel washed out on camera. Blush adds a natural pop of color back into the face and depending on blush placement you can give yourself a more lifted look or a more full face look. Also if you're a glossy blush loving gal you might want to think twice on picture day. You don't want the camera picking up any extra shine, so I recommend going with a matte product! You can check out a video here on how to apply, but make sure this step is not overlooked. I've also linked some of my favorite Fall shades to consider!
Apply your products in natural light! More than likely you’ll be taking photos outside or under natural light so make sure your makeup is applied in similar lighting. Bathroom or indoor lighting can give off a more yellow tone which may impact your application. I say set your phone in your windowsill, open those blinds and apply your products right there in natural light. This serves 2 purposes! First you’ll be able to see how your application is being picked up on camera giving you some insight on how heavy you should apply. Secondly, you’ll be in similar lighting as the actual pictures so you’re able to select shades and apply based on the same lighting. It's a win win in my book!
I don’t know if you love family photos as much as I do, but I hope these tips help you if you are prepping for them. I think when you feel confident with your appearance going into photos, they turn out so much better! So happy family photo shoot! Make sure to bring snacks for the kiddos, I usually have to bribe mine, and hopefully these few tips help you feel prepped and ready for the big day!
